Song of Xishi

By Wang Wei

This poem is included in Three Hundred Tang Poems.

Beauty is valued everywhere in the world; how could Xishi remain obscure for long?

In the morning she was a girl by the Yue stream; by evening she became a consort in the Wu palace.

When lowly, how was she different from the crowd? Only after rising to honor did people realize her rarity.

She summoned others to apply fragrant powder; she no longer put on her silk robes herself.

The lord’s favor made her even more coquettish; with his affection, there was no right or wrong.

Her former companions who washed silk with her could not return home in the same carriage.

I tell this to the girl next door: how can you hope to imitate her frown and achieve the same?
