To Secretary Zhang
By Wang Wei
This poem is included in Three Hundred Tang Poems.
In my later years I only love tranquility,
And care nothing about worldly affairs.
自顾无长策,空知返旧林。
Looking back, I have no great plan,
Only knowing to return to the old forest.
松风吹解带,山月照弹琴。
The pine wind blows my loosened belt,
The mountain moon shines on my zither playing.
君问穷通理,渔歌入浦深。
You ask about the principle of poverty and success —
Listen to the fisherman’s song entering the deep inlet.
